About the research

Clean and drinkable water flows from our taps, but where does it come from? "In Flanders, we extract our drinking water from various raw water sources, such as underground reserves, canals and rivers. This water is then thoroughly purified by drinking water companies so that it is safe for consumption," explains VITO researcher Joni Dehaspe. "We continuously monitor the quality of raw water sources with sensors. This allows us to intervene quickly in case of serious pollution, such as a discharge by a company. Thanks to advanced computer models, we can even predict the consequences of pollution or prolonged drought. This is how we manage and protect our precious water resources using sensors and data."

Introducing Joni Dehaspe, a dedicated environmental engineer on a mission to make a difference. After her MSc at ETH Zürich, Joni continued as a doctoral researcher at UFZ in Leipzig, investigating nutrient processing in river networks. From there, she joined VITO in 2021 where she focuses on water quality, performing data analytics and modeling of biogeochemical processes in freshwaters, soils, and groundwater.
