About the research

Playing sports with an allergy? Just ask Remco Evenepoel - that's no fun. But before you reach for your allergy medication, you might want to think twice.

🚴🏽‍♂️ Research at UGent already showed that some allergy medications can reduce your performance on the bike.

🏋🏻‍♀️ In her doctorate, Alexia Van de Loock examined what that medication does to strength training. And what did it turn out? You build as much muscle mass as without medication ... but you gain, on average, half a kilo of fat.

Alexia has a passion for the moving human body. After completing her master's degree in Physical Education and Exercise Science, she delved further into the influence of allergy medication on athletic performance. In her doctorate, she investigates how allergy medication affects both endurance and strength training. With her research, she aims to help athletes better understand how their bodies respond to these medications and how to get the most out of their training.
