How can catching laying hens be improved?

About the research

In her PhD, Femke Delanglez (ILVO - UGent) investigated how catching laying hens can be done better, for both humans and animals. πŸ™ŽπŸ»β€β™‚οΈ πŸ“ When laying hens have to go to the slaughterhouse, they are caught in the dark - because they are calmer then. Yet they often still get stressed or injured. It is also hard work for the catchers. Femke went in search of a better method, with an eye for the welfare of the hens as well as the working conditions of the catchers.

Cats, dogs, horse riding, and nature walks through the fields inspired Femke Delanglez to study biosciences. Femke is interested in animal welfare and wants to research this within the poultry sector. Her doctoral research at ILVO and UGent started from her commitment to animal welfare. Thus, her research focuses on improving the catching and transport of laying hens and broilers.
