How can we control the impact of air pollution on our health?

About the research

Every breath you take is a mix of particles. Some particles are essential to life, like oxygen, but others might be air pollutants from industry or transport that can harm your health. Completely pollutant-free air isn't realistic. While we can’t eliminate it completely, we can lower pollution levels to reduce health risks. That’s where researcher Elisa Duarte (UHasselt) steps in. She models different air quality scenarios to help policymakers define risk levels of air pollution and to take measures to reduce these health risks.

Passionate about the power of mathematics to describe all that surrounds us, Elisa Duarte started with an engineering degree and ended with a PhD in biostatistics. A lifelong learner, Elisa is returning to academic research as a postdoctoral fellow, pursuing her desire to use mathematics to answer health questions. She is currently investigating the impact of environmental exposures such as temperature and air pollutants on the health of the Flemish population, to inform policies to reduce the risk of these factors.
