Knowledge-sharing in agriculture is sometimes more effective than the best medicine

About the research

Controlling worm infections in cows - surely you just use deworming treatments, don’t you? Yes and no, says ILVO researcher Leen Lietaer. She is building a ‘community of practice’, bringing together farmers, researchers and vets. This allows, for example, for the direct exchange of expertise on preventing such infections. Because sharing knowledge sometimes works better than the best medicine.

Having grown up on a dairy farm and remaining passionate about the agricultural sector, Leen chose to study veterinary medicine. But her interests extended beyond treating sick animals. She wanted a deeper understanding of how a farm operates, including its economic and social drivers, as well as the societal challenges it faces. At ILVO, she has found her niche as a socio-economic researcher, helping to bridge the gap between research and practice.
