About the research

Did you know that quinoa, a grain from the Andes, is now being grown right here in Flanders? Diana Estrella explains why this grain might be the next big thing in Belgian fields. Protein-packed, climate-resilient — but tricky to grow here. That’s where her research at the Flanders Research Institute for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food comes in.

With a background in civil engineering, Diana transitioned into water resources management and eventually found her path in agriculture. Growing up with parents who were farmers, she now dedicates her work to support farmers in increasing crop diversity, improving yields, and promoting sustainable practices. She finds joy growing her own vegetables in a local community garden and feels a deep connection with nature.
