About the research

99% of people in prison are released at some point. So it is crucial to prepare them for this release. Music can help with this, education scientist Silke Marynissen (VUB - FWO) explains in this video. "If people in prison can make songs and share them with the outside world, they feel connected again." Or how music can help build a bridge between prison and society.

From a young age, Silke Marynissen found her passion in music. As an amateur musician, she witnessed the power music can have on people. During her studies in adult educational sciences, Silke became intrigued by people living in prison. Combining her passion for music with her research interest in prisons, Silke is currently doing a PhD research at the VUB in Brussels on music programs in prison to better understand how and why they work.
