Through the teachers’ eyes: inequity in early childhood education

About the research

5 seconds vs 10 minutes... That's the gap in teacher attention between two 3-year-old children in the same classroom during story time, and it's not random. Thibaut Duthois (Ghent University) ran one of the world's largest eye-tracking studies in education (80 teachers, ca. 600 kids) to find out why. Turns out the quietest, linguistically vulnerable kids, often the ones who need support most, get overlooked. "Teachers mean well, but unintentionally their attention is drawn to the loudest voices in the classroom", as Thibaut explains. That's why, together with his colleagues, he developed and tested a training program for teachers that actually closes the gap. Watch the video to find out more!
