Through the teachers’ eyes: inequity in early childhood education

5 seconds vs 10 minutes... That's the gap in teacher attention between two 3-year-old children in the same classroom during story time, and it's not random. In his PhD Thibaut Duthois (Ghent University) set out to find out why. Turns out the quietest kids, often the ones who need support most, get overlooked. To help fix this, Thibaut and his colleagues developed and tested a training program for teachers that actually closes the gap.

Teacher Tapp: talking about, but above all with, education

We talk a lot about education. But do we listen enough to the people who stand in front of the class every day? 👩‍🏫📱 Researcher Stéphanie Vanderheeren and her colleagues launched Teacher Tapp in Flanders for this very purpose. In this free app, more than 1,000 people from the education sector – from teachers to headteachers – answer three short questions every day about classroom practice or current affairs. The app provides a unique insight into what is going on in education and stimulates discussion, from the staff room to parliament.

High time for tools to help with dyslexia and dyscalculia at school

Every class has at least one student with a learning disability such as dyslexia or dyscalculia. Unfortunately, some schools do not always allow these students to use aids such as laptops with reading software or calculators. That is why HOGENT developed ‘Dysparcours’, an empathy tool that helps teachers, care coordinators, and parents to better understand what children with learning disabilities experience.

Math in preschool!

Did you know that preschoolers have a surprisingly good understanding of exponential growth? Hilde Rabaut investigated how picture books and board games can be used to stimulate mathematical thinking in preschool. And that is necessary, because the math results of Flemish schoolchildren have been declining alarmingly for years.

How do you deal with problem behaviour at school?

Students constantly talking in class, making crazy noises or just walking around... Recognise this? As a teacher, it is often difficult to deal with problem behaviour in pupils. To support teachers in this, Julie D'haeyer and her colleagues developed 'Leerkracht Veerkracht' (Teacher Resilience). A programme that allows you, together with your school team, to look for a solution that works for your school.

Learning through play

Research shows that young children learn too little in nurseries. Should creches then become little schools? "No," says pedagogue Simon Wemel. "However, they can focus on 'learning by playing', because playing is the driving force in young children's development." To inspire and support child supervisors in this, Simon and his colleague Ann Steverlynck created the book "The realm of play", with numerous practical examples. Let's play!

The teacher: a superhero for every child?'

How does a teacher deal with diversity in the classroom? Many teachers feel inadequately trained in this area. Engaging in dialogue with pupils, parents, and colleagues helps to think of the most powerful solutions to these challenges together. But how do you start? Marijke Wilssens and her colleagues have developed a box of conversation starters to help teachers do just that.
